Brotto Figs

In this article our dedicated grower of figs tells us more about the fig season.

Mauricio Brotto from Brotto figs says: ,,This fig season started a little bit early, which resulted in a big volume for November. The great weather conditions give us good quality figs of good size, color and flavor. Season 2010-2011 is now almost on its 50% of production, and we are producing year round with peak volumes from November thru June. At this moment the production has increased by 10% compared to the last year. We expect that our final growth of this season will also be 10% up. So looking at the product quality and production volumes we can be short: This is a great fig season!”

Brotto  cultivates only one fig variety, called Brown Turkey or “Roxo de Valinhos”. The pear shaped fig with its purple skin and red pulp, has a distinctive sweet flavor and is delicious when ripe.

Brotto is a family based company which started planting figs in 1959. Brotto has two farms producing at the same time and each produce around 50% of the total production. The Brotto farms are based in the Campinas region both 100km northwest of Sao Paulo city. This area is the heart of the Brazilian fig production, where figs can grow year round because of the combination of good soil, perfect temperature, and great weather. Brotto figs are well known as the best quality figs in Brazil as well as in Europe.

Since the year 2000,  Nature’s Pride is the exclusive European, fig import partner of Brotto. Nature’s Pride takes around 75% of their production and 25% is kept for the local market.
